Pink Offers Sympathy for Kate's Pregnancy Woes

12/10/2012 at 02:30 PM EST

Pink and Willow Sage Hart

NPG

She's tiny, athletic and so fit she can sing while hanging upside down performing Cirque du Soleil-style moves. But Pink says she was just like many other women when she was pregnant last year – devouring a whole cheesecake in one sitting, gaining 60 pounds, feeling no morning sickness, but rather rage, often pointed at husband Carey Hart.

She now feels sympathy for the ailing Duchess of Cambridge, who is suffering in the early stages of her own pregnancy.

"I didn't have morning sickness at all, I just had genuine rage throughout my pregnancy," said the singer, 33. "I'm talking 28 Days Later rage. Demonic eyes. I wanted to kill everybody," she told London's Mirror.

"I remember the first time my husband Carey p––d me off during my pregnancy and I bit his head off ... his eyes glazed over, he was so scared," says Pink. "He realized this is how it was and he better not say another word. I wasn't pukey – I was just angry."

Now a happy mom to 18-month-old Willow, the former gymnast is back in shape, thanks to tons of core workouts, and she's ready to tour in 2013 with a chart-topping (and Grammy-nominated) album, The Truth of Love.

The tattooed singer says she gets why her fierce energy sometimes can be intimidating, but says she has also tender side.

"I completely understand why people can be scared of me," she says. "But underneath all that rage I'm a petite tulip."

Weekend Holiday Movie Guide: Watch This, Not That

12/08/2012 at 02:15 PM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis and Bill Murray

Twentieth Century FOX; Nicola Dove/Focus Features

The hectic holidays are almost upon us, which means it's the perfect time of year to head to the movies – provided you don't get stuck with the cinematic equivalent of a fruitcake.

So arm yourself with this handy watch this/skip that weekend movie guide before your Aunt Mildred suggests a Red Dawn/Killing Them Softly double feature. (Seriously, don't even entertain that idea.)

Watch This: Lincoln
Daniel Day-Lewis could win another Oscar playing Lincoln, so you might as well get in on the conversation – especially since his Great Emancipator is so shrewd and funny. (Even so, James Spader is even more hilarious as a presidential influence peddler.) For those looking to actually learn a little something, no worries, the whole movie is one awesome episode of The West Wing: Top Hats and Bonnets. Bonus: Your family will think you're all kinds of classy for suggesting it.

Skip That: Hyde Park on Hudson
You know it's rough when the main character is the dullest person in the movie. Laura Linney plays Daisy Suckley, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's (Bill Murray) cousin/girlfriend, but she's so boring it's impossible to tell why he's into her. Sure, there's a fun subplot about British royals coming to town, but it's not enough to overcome Daisy Downer and President HeyMyEyesAreUpHere.

Be Sure to Catch This Other Thing: Silver Linings Playbook
As funny as it is unhinged, Playbook is an easy winner for (adult) family viewing. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence could grab Oscar nods for playing unbalanced neighbors with kooky chemistry. Plus, it's great fun watching hilariously inappropriate people when you're not actually related to them.

And What Do You Mean You Still Haven't Seen: Skyfall
Let's make a rule right now that all movie villains have to be played by Oscar winners, preferably Javier Bardem. You think I jest, but you'll be with me once you see Bardem as the silky, sick Silva in one of the greatest spy thrillers ever made. He's got an eye for the ladies – and one on a certain secret agent man. No wonder, even as a creaky Bond, Daniel Craig fills out the suit beautifully and does a hell of an acting job to boot. (When Bardem is your nemesis and Judi Dench is your boss, you step it up.)

Meet PEOPLE's 2012 Heroes of the Year

Heroes Among Us

12/06/2012 at 02:25 PM EST

They stepped up to help people in need, often putting themselves in harm's way.

One thing PEOPLE's incredible 2012 Heroes of the Year award winners all have in common: selflessness and compassion. This week, PEOPLE profiles individuals whose extraordinary bravery and kindness stood out this year.

Michael McDonnell, 51, and Dylan Smith, 23, of Belle Harbor, N.Y., are two of them.

During Superstorm Sandy Oct. 29, as a 6 ft. surge roared down their block, and a fire from a gas line explosion engulfed houses around them, McDonnell, a sales director for Chefs Diet, and Smith, a lifeguard, ushered six people to safety with a homemade rope bridge and Smith's surfboard.

Says neighbor Katie Cregg, whom the pair helped: "Michael just took charge. He looked me straight in the eye, and I knew then and there we were going to be okay. And then the kid with the surfboard arrived like an angel, and everyone's spirits lifted."

McDonnell and Smith are in good company.

Among 2012's other winners: Father and son pair J.D., 52, and James Bennett, 32, who pulled two toddlers from a burning van in Sanger, Calif.; Madison Wallraf, 16, of Johnsburg, Ill., who raced in and out of a burning barn to help save 22 horses; and N.Y.P.D. Officer Larry DePrimo, who bought shoes for a barefoot man during a cold night in New York City last month – and became a worldwide hero.

An overnight celebrity since a photo of his kind act went viral, DePrimo, 25, says he hopes what he did inspires others.

"I just love to help people," the humble officer says. "That's why I became a cop."

Neil Lane wants to make one thing clear about newlyweds Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum: “Seriously, J.P. and Ashley are so in love,” the celebrity jeweler tells PEOPLE of the Bachelorette season 7 stars. “Say what you will about reality TV, this is real-life love and they’re in this forever!”

So what better way to celebrate such affection than with some serious wedding bling? “We wanted to do something very special for their bands and all of Ashley’s wedding jewelry,” says Lane, who also designed Hebert’s 3.5-carat, central cushion-cut engagement ring (above) for Rosenbaum’s May 2011 proposal. “All three of us worked together on the bands over the last month and for Ashley, we created a design for a handmade, platinum band with French-cut diamonds in the middle section bordered by round diamonds on the side (above).”

For his, “J.P. wanted something stylish and unusual but not too blingy,” Lane says. The upshot? A wide platinum band with a raised elliptical edge in the middle (above) “for a 3D [look].”

Rounding out the couple’s wedding jewelry were 5-carat diamond-and-platinum cufflinks (above) for Rosenbaum (“J.P. wanted a little sparkle and glam on his cuff,” says Lane) and for Hebert, 10 carats of vintage, Indian-style drop earrings (above) and more than 30 carats in diamond bracelets (top).

“They loved the jewelry — and they really love each other,” says Lane, who first met the couple in Fiji toward the end of their season (see photo below). “When I first got to know them in Fiji, I knew they were going to last. They were so affectionate and then when I’ve seen them since it was clear they were a very true, inseparable couple ready to go on life’s journey together. It’s like they have goo-goo eyes for each other! They’re love-struck!” Tell us: Are you a fan of Ashley and J.P.’s gems?

Anderson Cooper Is Temporarily Blinded

12/04/2012 at 02:30 PM EST

Anderson Cooper can see once again after a temporary – and painful – bout of blindness.

Cooper posted a picture of himself on Instagram Tuesday sporting a white gauze patch over his right eye. "Temporarily blinded last week while on assignment," he said. "UV light bouncing off water. Much better now. Details today on #andersonlive."

On Anderson Cooper Live, he explained how he went blind over the weekend while filming a story for 60 Minutes on the coast of Portugal.

"I wake up in the middle of the night and it feels like my eyes are on fire," he said. "It turns out I have sunburned my eyeballs and I go blind. I went blind for 36 hours. I took this picture of me after I went to the hospital."

He then showed his audience his photo and joked, "That's my new Match.com profile picture, by the way."

But the potential damage he faced is no laughing matter, and Cooper had NBC's chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, on to warn viewers about eye protection.

Snyderman said that the light reflected off the water burned his retinas, but that the hospital visit could have easily been avoided.

"It's a reminder that frankly everyone needs sunglasses," she advised. And to Cooper, she added, "Fortunately for you you're going to be fine, but it's a real reminder."

Shania Twain Kicks Off Vegas Show

Shania Twain in Las Vegas Dec. 1

Shania Twain still feels like a woman. And now she feels like a Las Vegas headliner.

The Canadian singer kicked off her two-year residency Saturday at Vegas's Caesars Palace with a 90-minute show that features many of her hits and takes the crowd on what she calls a "personal journey."

"The show is very fun for me," Twain, 47, told reporters Saturday. "I was a bit worried that we were staying in the same place. Was I going to lose that edge? But I've never had a show this exciting before."

In fact, her commitment to the show is so intense that she's gone an entire week without seeing the sun (in a town that is famously showered in sunshine) in preparation for her opening night.

It paid off.

Taking the stage for the first time in eight years, Twain appeared giddy and her voice sounded as strong as it did when she was pumping out Grammy-winning songs like "You're Still The One" in the late 90s.

Asked how nervous she was about taking the stage again, Twain said, "I'm actually pretty good."

Her comfort, she said, comes from surrounding herself with things she loves on stage and her husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, who may be her biggest supporter.

"I cannot live without him," she said. "I need that support. I just need what we have. It grounds me every day and reminds me that there are a lot of important things going on in the world."

Added Twain: "He keeps it all in perspective."

What's the Latest Fashion Trend the Duchess Is Starting?

Style News Now

Katy Perry, Kate Middleton, Emily BluntGetty; Startraks (2)

After a quiet Thanksgiving holiday, Hollywood stars were out en force this week, dazzling (and sometimes disappointing) in a whole host of haute looks. And just in time for holiday party dress season, we saw some emerging trends you may want to try. Read on for more …

Up: Sleeves with personality: Katy Perry and Naomi Watts proved that dresses with sleeves don’t have to be snoozey — in fact, they can make a real statement on an otherwise plain dress. Perry added a floor-length cape to her midnight-blue Naeem Khan design, while Watts went for a winged look in a black below-the-knee number.

Up: Ladies in collars: So long are the days of navel-baring necklines — at least for the cooler months — since stars like the Duchess of Cambridge, Rihanna, Rose Byrne and Lucy Hale are taking a cue from the guys and donning shirts and dresses with buttoned-up collars. And because the trend is having such a major moment, we have a feeling it will last well into awards season, even at the most formal of events like the Oscars.

Down: White dresses with cutouts: Winter white gowns and cutouts are both huge trends this season, but when combined the look feels rather summery. Need proof? Just check out Emily Blunt in her Calvin Klein Collection dress. Even though she looks pretty, the whole ensemble feels better suited for August — not November.

Tell us: Which trend are you most excited to try? Vote below!

All the Details on Katie Holmes's Broadway Premiere Look

Style News Now

11/30/2012 at 11:00 AM ET

Katie Holmes
Andrew H. Walker/Getty

Her performance received good reviews, but we’re not so sure people will be raving about the outfit Katie Holmes selected for the Dead Accounts premiere party.

For the Broadway play’s debut in N.Y.C. on Thursday evening, the star chose a busy feminine floral-print dress with black-and-white embellishment at the neckline, a black crochet panel at the waist and flared sleeves, plus a lemon clutch and Gio Diev strappy pumps.

We can’t say we strongly dislike any one part of the outfit (love the print, love the sexy touch at the waist, love the clutch, we could go on…), but all together, there’s just a lot going on with this ensemble … much like the plot of the play.

One aspect of her look we can’t critique: her Duchess of Cambridge-esque mane, a surprising — and welcome — departure from the way Holmes normally styles her hair (that would be stick-straight).

But we want to know what you think: Do you like Holmes’s outfit? What about her hair?

Ellen Pompeo: My Neighbor Took My Chicken Egg

11/29/2012 at 02:45 PM EST

As the mother of a toddler, Ellen Pompeo is often forced to wake up early – with a little help from her rooster.

During Tuesday's appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actress, 43, dished about owning several hens and one male rooster, a fact that didn't go unnoticed by one of her neighbors.

"I have this other neighbor who I don't know and still don't know and she emailed me one day and said, 'I don't have my rooster anymore,'" Pompeo told Ellen DeGeneres. "'But my hens are very depressed because the rooster isn't around, can I take an egg, a fertilized egg?'"

Unsure of how to respond, the Grey's Anatomy star simply obliged, writing, "Nice to meet you too. Come and get an egg."

While Pompeo went on to say she wasn't at home when the neighbor came to collect, DeGeneres suggested the woman was just looking to get a look at the star's impressive chicken set-up in her backyard.

"They do have a very secure coop that was built by a wonderful contractor," Pompeo said. "The chicken wire has to go like 3-feet deep to make sure that no rodents [get in] … but I do let them roam free for a part of the day because they get agitated if they're all cooped up."

"They're in the coop most of the time for their safety," she continued, noting that hawks are a concern, but, "they roam free and they get their worms and things like that."

Khloé Kardashian Spills the Secret of Her Family's Perfect Christmas Card

11/28/2012 at 02:15 PM EST

'Tis the season for ... Photoshop?

In an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The X Factor host Khloé Kardashian shared the secret of her family's annual Christmas card: If a family member can't attend the shoot, they get Photoshopped in to make the picture complete.

"We pretend that we're always together," Kardashian said during the interview airing Wednesday. "The powers of cameras and Photoshop."

While the Kardashian clan can't always be in the same physical space, they do their best to make lasting memories, she says.

Lamar Odom, Kendall Jenner and Scott Disick will all be expertly (and digitally) placed in this year's card.

"The older we get the more we stick together. Who knew?," Kardashian said. "I'm surprised Scott’s still around but he's here."

Brad Pitt Spent Thanksgiving in London on Set

Brad Pitt

While most Americans celebrated Thanksgiving with family on Thursday, Brad Pitt spent his holiday with zombies on the set of World War Z in London.

"I didn't know it was Thanksgiving until like midday. Until [the] afternoon," he told PEOPLE in an interview for the coming issue.

"When you're overseas, they don't celebrate it in England. And [Angelina Jolie] and some of the kids are overseas in Cambodia this week, working on the [The Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation] there," he said. "It completely escaped me until someone brought me some English pumpkin pie."

Even though Pitt, 48, went without the traditional turkey and stuffing this year, he didn't seem to mind, saying, "That's okay, last year we had a big meal and we don't normally miss things twice."

Still, Pitt was certainly into the spirit of the holiday. He put the entire contents of his wallet, $1,100, into the hands of a fundraiser collecting money for the Southampton General Hospital's neonatal unit, where a friend's son, Zachary Gallagher, had spent the first nine weeks of his life.

"The fundraiser had finished, and I got a phone call from my best friend, who said, 'We have had a small donation.' I thought she was messing about and was going to say, 'My dad's given you a fiver' or something, then she said, 'It's from Brad Pitt!' " Zachary's mother, Karley Gallagher, 23, tells PEOPLE.

"He said that he had seen the fundraiser mentioned in the local papers and seen my fliers and thought it was a really great cause and was just sorry he couldn't have been there," she adds "The silver lining is that Zachary is home and alive. ... To have Brad assist us is more than we could ever have wished for."

While Pitt, in New York Monday for a special screening of Killing Them Softly, plans to fly back to London on Tuesday to continue filming, the Jolie-Pitt bunch is already focused on the next holiday.

Maddox, 11, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 6, and 4-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne have already mailed letters to Santa from the village of Littlebourne in rural Kent, England.

Vanessa Hudgens burned some calories on Thanksgiving with a SoulCycle spinning class in New York's Union Square neighborhood.

"She was in the middle front row in cropped yoga pants, a pink tank top and a black sports bra," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Although she was "on her iPhone until the class started," once things got underway, she was "really bouncy and dancing to the music."

"She had a big smile on her face," the source adds.

Frederika Goldberger, Better Known as Mamika, Turns Old Age Into a Super Power

11/24/2012 at 03:00 PM EST

Mamika

Courtesy Sacha Goldberger

It's a bird ... it's a plane ... it's super grandma!

When 94-year-old Frederika Goldberger retired in the early 80s, she was bored and unhappy, so her grandson, Sacha Goldberger, began creating incredible photographs of her to lift her spirits and keep her active.

After a few years and plenty of photoshoots, Mamika – Frederika's superhero alter ego – was created.

"I always loved comics and I wanted to show what could happen to superheroes when they are old," Sacha told TODAY.com.

"The pictures gave her something to do again and helped give her more self-confidence again," Sacha said. "It's a love story. Before I made the pictures, I wanted everyone to know her – she’s incredible."

But long before she posed for the camera, Frederika was a hero. Born a baroness into a wealthly Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, she was forced into hiding during World War II. Later, Frederika and her husband would risk their lives to help hide others from the Nazis – by the end of the war, her efforts had saved 10 people. Frederika later relocated to France where she raised her family.

Mamika – which translates to "my little grandma" in Hungarian – no longer has to worry about post-retirement boredom. This past April Sacha's first book, Mamika: My Mighty Little Grandmother was published and the duo has begun working on a movie together.

"Before, I'd see pictures of older people and they always looked sad," Sacha said. "I wanted to show that you can be old and still have a sense of humor and be fun."

Scott Macaulay Gives Strangers Free Thanksgiving Dinner - and Family for a Day

Heroes Among Us

11/22/2012 at 01:00 PM EST

When the turkey, potatoes and stuffing get passed around at Scott Macaulay's Thanksgiving dinner table, there's really no telling whether he'll know his fellow diners.

For 27 years, Macaulay, 51, has cooked and served Thanksgiving to groups of strangers in Melrose, Mass., because, "I don't think anyone should spend Thanksgiving alone," he tells PEOPLE.

His annual dinner came to be when his parents got a divorce in September of 1985 and then began arguing about where he would spend Thanksgiving. When Macaulay realized spending the day with either one or splitting it up wasn't going to work, he resigned himself to attending neither celebration. But he didn't want to eat alone on one of his favorite holidays, either.

"So, I put an ad in the local paper that I would cook dinner for up to 12 people," he says. "And it went pretty well. Thanksgiving is not a holiday about presents or fireworks, it is about giving thanks for the blessings in your life and you just can't do that by yourself. It isn't as much about the food as it is about being together."

Through the years, his annual dinners have grown in number – and in the connections he's made with the people at the table. Last year, 89 people were served dinner by Macaulay, who is single and buys and cooks the majority of the meal. He now holds the feast at the First Baptist Church in Melrose, where he makes the atmosphere more "homey" by bringing in his own rocking chairs, a faux fireplace and serving appetizers so people can visit together.

"I don't want it to look like an institution," he says. "I make it look like a home as much as possible, with cloth tablecloths and napkins and plastic silverware that looks real."

He recalls diners through the years: A woman who comes because her kids live out of state and it is too far to travel, a man whose wife has Alzheimer's, a young woman whose father was in the hospital nearby (Macaulay was recently invited to her wedding and he attended), as well as those who are recently widowed or divorced or who just find themselves with nowhere to go on the day.

"It's nice for us to share our blessings together and enjoy the day," says Macaulay, who also delivers meals to local police who have to work on the holiday.

Macaulay doesn't own a computer (or a television), so he relies on word of mouth and his annual notice in the paper to get the word out to people in the community. His reservation numbers before the holiday were at 32 for this year, but he expects and plans for more, getting up at 4 a.m. to put four turkeys into the ovens at the church and then start peeling and cooking the potatoes.

"I don't like to eat alone," Macaulay says, simply. "And I enjoy getting to have Thanksgiving with other people who want to enjoy being together too."

Harley Pasternak: 5 Ways to Avoid Blowing Your Diet on Thanksgiving

Only on People.com

11/21/2012 at 01:10 PM EST

Harley Pasternak and Jessica Simpson

John Sciulli/BEImages

Celebrity trainer and PEOPLE.com blogger Harley Pasternak give his top 5 tips for a healthy, happy Thanksgiving. Plus, he shares some holiday recipes from some of his star clients like Jessica Simpson and Megan Fox.

Turkey, stuffing, corn bread, cranberry sauce, apple pie, sweet potatoes with marshmallow topping: Thanksgiving has gone from being a day when we give thanks for everything we have, to a day when we EAT everything we have!

Studies show that people can eat between 3,000 to 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving alone, which is, of course, a lot more than necessary on a generally sedentary day.

While I completely support treating yourself on Thanksgiving, I encourage you to be at least somewhat mindful about what you consume. Studies show that people tend to gain 5 to 7 lbs. between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And I don't want your health and fitness goals to be set back because of what's supposed to be a joyous holiday.

Let this Thanksgiving be the first one in which the turkey – and not you – is the thing getting stuffed!

5 Tips for Making Thanksgiving Healthier

1. Walk it out!
The morning of Thanksgiving, go for a brisk walk. If you're traveling to Thanksgiving dinner, park your car a few blocks away and walk the extra distance. After dinner, get some fresh air and walk around the block. Before you know it, you will have taken a few extra thousand steps, burned off your dessert and helped your digestion!

2. Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch
Filling up on "good calories" on Thanksgiving is key in controlling your appetite come dinnertime. Showing up ravenous to Thanksgiving dinner is never a good idea.

3. Exercise portion control
I know some think this is Thanksgiving sacrilege, but honestly portion control is the name of the game. First, start with a smaller plate. Smaller plates equal smaller portions. Next, follow the 3:2:1 rule: 3 parts veggies, 2 parts protein, 1 part whole grains.

4. Lose the booze!
Not only is alcohol almost twice as calorically dense as carbohydrates and protein, but your body stops burning fat as efficiently when you drink!

5. Take your time
I always say, life's too short not to enjoy yourself on special days, and Thanksgiving dinner is definitely one of them! So go ahead and cut yourself a piece of mom's pecan pie – but instead of shoveling it in your mouth, slow down and enjoy each bite.

Try Some of My Clients' Thanksgiving Recipes

Jessica Simpson's Broccoli Rice Casserole
The truth is that my client Jessica Simpson – who is looking amazing these days! – loves using Cheese Whiz. But I modified her recipe and substituted real light cheddar cheese to make this holiday casserole more healthy.

Ingredients
• 2 (10 ounce) boxes frozen chopped broccoli, thawed
• 2 cups cooked rice
• 8 ounces shredded lite cheddar cheese
• 2 (10¾ ounce) cans cream of chicken soup. Or you use 1 can each of cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup
• 1 small onion, chopped
• 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Directions
• Cook onion in oil in a large skillet until soft.
• Add remaining ingredients and cook just until cheese is melted.
• Put in 2 quart casserole dish.
• Bake at 350 (uncovered) for 1 hour.

To make ahead and freeze: Mix all ingredients together (start with your rice cooked, not raw) and spoon into two or even three smaller casserole dishes, cover, label and freeze. If you thaw overnight, just cook for one hour. If cooking from frozen state, add 10 minutes or so, check for doneness.
